Hugh Freeze Named Auburn's 31st Head Football Coach

Auburn Athletics Announces Hiring of Former Ole Miss Coach

Freeze Brings Winning Record to Plains

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn University has named Hugh Freeze as its 31st head football coach, the school announced on Monday.

Freeze, 54, most recently led the Ole Miss Rebels to a 10-3 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. He has a career head coaching record of 67-35 in seven seasons at the helm of an FBS program.

"I am thrilled to welcome Hugh Freeze to the Auburn family," said Auburn Athletics Director John Cohen. "Hugh is a proven winner with a track record of success on and off the field. He is a man of integrity who shares our values and is committed to developing our student-athletes both on and off the field."

Freeze replaces Bryan Harsin, who was fired after going 9-12 in two seasons at Auburn. Auburn had a disappointing 5-7 record in 2022.

Freeze is a native of Oxford, Mississippi, and played quarterback at Southern Miss from 1987-90. He has been a head coach at Lambuth University (2008-12), Arkansas State University (2011-13), and Ole Miss (2012-16, 2017-22).

Freeze has been praised for his offensive prowess and his ability to recruit elite talent. He is expected to bring an up-tempo, spread offense to Auburn.

"I am honored and humbled to be the head football coach at Auburn University," said Freeze. "Auburn is a special place with a rich tradition and passionate fan base. I am excited to get to work and build on the success that has been established here. We are going to win championships and make Auburn proud."
